Wenxing Bridge
Yongxin City, Jiangxi Province, China
2020
Area:
11,500 m²
Status:
Entry in international competition
Client:
Yongxin County People’s Government
The new Wenxing Bridge puts the focus back on the most essential natural element of Yongxin City, the water/river. Through a revitalisation of the river zone and exciting new features, the bridge and its embedded program triggers the redevelopment of the Old City. A new perspective on the river is provided to the residents by paths, seating areas, vertical connections, and water activities to the sides of the bridge. The unusual circular form of the bridge is inspired by the strong presence of circular shapes in the Chinese culture.
The round bridge has a central void in the shape of the Chinese character for water: 水 creating a dynamic arrangement of inner terraces as a result of the character's form. Panoramic views across to the landscape and the city, but also inwards overlooking the river water and the public life on the bridge. The outer ring provides circulation for pedestrians and bicycles, the inner roofed zones accommodate commercial and public areas.
